“Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.”
Colossians 3:18
Welp, I just lost some of you just by posting this verse but just hear me out. I know most of the time you hear about this verse the focus is on the word, “submit” and how to apply it. I want to come at it from a different angle.
Why would God command wives to “submit” or “come under the authority” of their husbands? I believe part of the reason is because:
Chaos ensues from a leadership void.
Think about it. Look at the places with the most crime and violence. What is missing from these places? Strong leaders. More specifically strong male leaders.
Somebody has to be in charge. It’s just natural.
Look at nature. Lions leading their pride. On the subject of Lions think about the movie Lion King and the difference between when Mufasa ruled versus when Scar ruled. The pride flourished under Mufasa’s leadership but suffered under Scar because Scar wasn’t a leader but a tyrant.
Chaos ensued until Simba defeated Scar and took his place as the rightful king.
In Ephesians, it says, “love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”
Jesus Christ, God made flesh, submitted to the leadership of God the Father. Not because he was lesser than the Father or weaker but because he trusted the Father’s leadership.
Peace ensues when husbands/men submit to the authority of God. By trusting God to take care of them, they are free to care for others.
