Do you brush off your sin like a feather? Or does it feel like a 5-ton elephant sitting on your chest threatening to crush you until you deal with it?

As Christians, I believe we should allow our sin to “crush” us so we feel the weight of it to keep us from sinning. The issue is that we make light of our sins.

According to Martyn-Lloyd Jones,

“You will never make yourself feel that you are a sinner, because there is a mechanism in you as a result of sin that will always be defending you against every accusation.”

And there is the issue we see in our world. We can convince ourselves that our sin is not that bad. Or worse we use God’s grace as an excuse to sin.

If our sin wasn’t that bad then why did God the Father have to crush His only Son, Jesus, on the cross?

“But he (Jesus) was pierced for our transgressions,

 he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
    and by his wounds we are healed.” –
Isaiah 53:5

As Christians, we should not take our sins lightly for we understand the price that was paid for them. Yet, it is the very act of being crushed by our sins that reminds us we are incapable of helping ourselves.

For that very reason, we should not make light of our sins but allow the weight of them to draw us closer to our Savior.
