Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.”

Hebrews 12:1

Recently, I went to the Grand Canyon with my oldest daughter. It was exactly as people described it “unbelievable.” You cannot wrap your mind around how deep and wide (yes please start singing the children’s song) the Grand Canyon is. It is absolutely mind boggling.

Let’s say you decide to take on the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim hike. This is a 21 mile hike which would take you anywhere between 9-14 hours to complete. Let’s imagine that you get a small rock inside your shoe at the very beginning of the hike. You choose not to deal with it because it’s just a small rock, right?

Your foot would be absolutely destroyed after completing this hike with a small rock in your shoe.

Would you hide the fact that there is a rock in your shoe from your hiking buddy? Would you be ashamed to ask your friend to stop so you could remove the rock?

So then why do we do those things with something way more serious? Why do we hide our sin from those who care about us most? Do you really think your friend is going to shame you for your sin? If they do then you should probably find new friends.

Our sins like the rock cause more damage the longer we ignore them.

Remove the rock.
