“I don’t want the world to hurt my son.”

I recently saw this quote from a celebrity on a magazine cover at my local gym. When I saw it I thought, “Hmm, interesting but isn’t that every parent’s wish?” Then I thought, “Yeah that would be nice but it’s not how the world operates.”

Now, I didn’t read the article or personally know this celebrity so I don’t have context for the quote so I am taking it at face value but should our wish really be that we hope the world doesn’t hurt our children?

Why not flip it and say, “I know the world will hurt my child so I want to equip them to face it.” The world is going to crush your kid and that’s just that.

“Wow, thanks for the upbeat optimistic attitude.”

But it’s true. Just think about your own life. At some point, the world absolutely crushed you. What did you do? How did you overcome it?

There’s a fancy word for this idea: resilience. Resilience is the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties.

Our kids will face difficult situations in this life. There will always be someone who doesn’t like them or a situation where they fail miserably or things just don’t go as planned. We need to teach our kids how to be resilient so they can navigate the trials of this world and come out stronger on the other side.
