“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Dallas Willard defines prayer as, “talking with God about what we are doing together.” That seems simple enough but can we really pray continually?

Does this mean we are alone in our rooms praying to God 24/7? I don’t believe so.

In Romans 8 we are reminded that as Christians not only does Jesus live in us but the does Spirit as well. This means that we don’t have to go to a place to talk with God. We can talk to him wherever we are.

I think to “pray continually” is more about being award that God is with us and that we have open and instant access to Him. It’s more about keeping God at the forefront of our minds kind of like a filter that all our choices go through.

If you pick up your phone right now, you can instantly get onto the internet because you are always connected. You may not always be on the internet but it’s available at anytime.

That’s what I believe it means to “pray continually.” It’s about keeping God at the forefront of our minds as filter for all our choices we make throughout the day. We are in “continual” conversation with God allowing Him to direct us through the day.
