The other night Don’t Give Up on Me by Andy Grammer came on. In the song, there is a line that says, “I will fight/ I will fight for you/ I always do, until my heart/ Is black and blue”

This triggered the memory of me driving across Iowa and Nebraska while listening to this song to go and “fight” for my marriage. Of course unbeknownst to me at the time the marriage had died long before I finally decided to “fight” for it.

I had it all backwards. I should have been fighting for my marriage from day one instead of waiting for disaster to kick me into gear. It was like I was performing CPR on a corpse. I could do chest compressions as hard as I wanted but ain’t bringing that one back.

What happened? I think about the person who passes away due to a heart attack. Obviously, they died due to their heart stopping but what were the issues before that caused this?

There are obvious reasons why my marriage ended but were there issues that I could have addressed earlier to give it a better chance at survival? Sure. Would they have saved the marriage? Who knows.

I do know that we can become complacent within our marriages and forget that they require work. We think once the vows are exchanged we are set for life. Wrong!

There is no cute answer to this but to get off your butt and fight for your marriage today.
