Why doesn’t Batman just kill the Joker? Honestly, why don’t any of the heroes just kill the bad guys instead of putting them in jail?
Yeah yeah I know the reason is that heroes don’t kill because if they did that would make them like the villain. But it would sure save them a lot of time and energy.
This makes me think about our response to the sin in our lives.
Why do we continue to live with it? Why do we think we can manage it by just putting it in “jail?” We think if we just put up all these boundaries and rules then we will be good.
We can try to “manage” our sin but it’s like saying you can manage the Joker by putting him under house arrest. That is not going to work. If you give sin even the smallest foothold, it will destroy you.
Just look at Proverbs 7:22-23 and what happens to the young man who is seduced by the adulterous woman:
“All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life.”
Sin always seems great at first but it always leads to the same place.
We have to kill sin or it will kill us.
