What’s the script I should teach my kids about their roles as a boy and as girls?
Do I teach my son to cook, bake, sew, hunt, fish, grow a garden, hit a home run, be in touch with his feelings but never let anyone see him cry?
Do I teach my girls to be independent, be their own boss, be a good wife, bake, cook, make sourdough, run a company, be tough and don’t take crap from anyone?
We live in an absolutely bonkers world. Many people can’t define what a woman is. Ask anyone what makes a boy a man and you will get hundreds of different responses.
Do I want my son to be able to do all those things? Sure, why not? And of course I want him to be in touch with his feelings because that man is safe.
Men who harm others usually do so out of anger and hurt. Real men protect the helpless by being in touch with their feelings. They are hurt by the pain others experience so they will stand against the evil hurting the helpless.
Do I want my girls to be able to do all those things as well? Yes. But I also want them to be strong and secure in themselves. I want them to be secure in who they are so they don’t go out into the world looking to be filled by material things or a relationship.
So the question comes back to, “What’s the script for my son and daughters?”
