If you had told me that at 33 years old I would be divorced and unemployed, I would have laughed in your face. I mean, come on I had been married for 12 years and was working as a Family Pastor at a church. I think I am good…

Until I wasn’t…

When I hit rock-bottom, I had two choices: stay here or work to restore my life.

“Yet even with intense emotional pain, we still have the choice: We can suppress the pain and distract ourselves, feel angry…about the situation, or try to see the meaning in the experience and use it as an opportunity to grow.”
-David J. Lieberman

What would it mean to “restore my life?”

First, what does it mean to restore something? Restore “to improve something until it is as good as it can be.”

This idea comes from a scripture passage in the Bible, 1 Peter 5:10, but the verses before help give insight into the process of being restored.

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God…” -1 Peter 5:6a

It’s the point of the movie where the hero realizes they cannot succeed on their own so they seek out a mentor. They humble themselves and admit they need help.

The process of restoration starts with admitting you are incapable of doing this yourself. It’s having the self-awareness to understand that your actions aren’t enough.

For me, it was a simple prayer, “God, I give up control and trust your plan.”
