“This music is awful! What ever happened to the good ol music I listened to as a kid?”
It’s a tale as old as time. Kid brings home the album of the latest pop icon and parents say, “No way! Not in my house!”
I remember it had gotten so bad for me that my mom bought me a Kutless cd (yes, I am dating myself here) because she wanted me to listen to some positive music. And if you are wondering I also eventually threw most of my cds out the car window.
As Christians, we get mad a people for listening to “secular” music, I am not even sure what that means other than it’s not K-Love music. And these same people think anything on K-Love is good because it’s “Christian” music.
Have you ever stopped and thought about the lyrics of some of these supposed “Christian” songs? Or looked up the artist to see how they live? What about the churches that these artists are associated with? Do you agree with them theologically?
We scrutinize “secular” music due to the language and lifestyles it may promote so why don’t we do the same with “Christian” music especially music we call “worship” music that we sing in our churches?
We need to be like the Bereans from Acts 17:11 who, “examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” Are the words we are singing match up with the truths of Scripture? If not, should we be singing them?
