This past Sunday at the church I attend the pastor spoke on the book of Proverbs and the idea that words matter.

This got me thinking especially in light of what happened to a former president. And it’s not just this situation. It’s across the nation. People are riled up and divided by the constant negative messages pushed by both sides of the aisle.

Words matter.

These days you can say what you want about anyone or anything as if it were a fact and very few will question it. Some will even believe it and begin to promote it as fact. Anyone can spread hateful lies about any person and blast it all over the internet.

We have become so comfortable and desensitized from sitting behind our screens that we have forgotten the sting in someone’s eyes when we cut them down with our words.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” -Philippians 4:8

What if instead of feeding on 24/7 news channels and our own personalized to our worldview home pages, we listened? To our neighbors, kids, spouse, and friends to hear how they feel so we could speak like instead of negativity?

What if instead of letting social media dictate our identity and purpose, we meditate on what the Bible tells us about how God views us?
